The best place to feel CNY atmosphere is undoubtedly Chinatown. Come to think of it, I haven't been there to roam the streets for 2 years+ due to my pregnancy. Last night, we decided to bring Jovin to Chinatown after work. We settled for quick dinner at my mum's place and set off by MRT around 6.30p.m. Jovan was left in the good care of my in-laws as we considered it would be too inconvenient bringing him along in pram and he was still having running nose and cough too. Jovin was very excited, dressed in her Barney dress, put on her sandals and happily held our hands. She happily sang on the bus and MRT, in very high spirits.
It was a breeze reaching Chinatown by MRT. Jovin was enchanted and fascinated by the sound of firecrackers, CNY songs and lightings. The streets were full of crowd so James had to carry Jovin when the streets were very crowded. There were many stalls which sold items targeted at the kiddies like drum ( Jovin was hooked onto it and I ended up buying a small one!), malt candies, magic toy ( kena conned spending 5 bucks and bought for Jovin, sigh...), flashing light sticks etc. All targeted to burn parents's holes.....
As we walked, we were thirsty and bought sugarcane drink, fishballs, and some snacks. We sat by one of the corners and Jovin enjoyed the fishballs. I enjoyed the seaweed cuttlefish, thought the taste was something special too. We resumed after recharging our tummies and it was a rewarding nite as we bought a big pack of items including new sleepwear for the kids, traditional outfit for Jovan, CNY decor, cheapo shoes for myself ( haha last min great bargain at $5!!!), princess dress for Jovin etc.
The most hilarious scene was that, Jovin was attracted by the CNY singing performance put up by the senior citizens. She was singing and dancing along with the rythm and the nearby audience were looking at her instead as she stood on the chair shaking her bums, legs and arms. We wanted to leave but she insisted in watching the performance. Both James and I were so amused by her. Haha.....
We went for some dessert and ordered milo for our girl. At the same time, we met the God of Wealth who was making his rounds distributing 4D red packets and sweets. Jovin is now no longer afraid as she used to be when she was younger. She even went to pull his moustach and shook hands with the 2 Gods hehe. It was already 11p.m when we left but our girl was still very energetic then, no signs of sleepiness.
The Chinatown trip was great this round and Jovin loved a lot as she came home and told my mum what she saw at Chinatown etc. Counting down to CNY in another 2 weeks time! Perhaps will make another visit to Chinatown with my mum again :)
